Peripatetic Music Teacher – Woodwind
Part time (0.6fte), temporary post to cover maternity leave from September 2011
Oxfordshire County Music Service based at Bayards Hill School, Oxford
The County Music Service provides a comprehensive package from early years to adult work, workshops and special projects as well as regular weekly instrumental tuition and holiday courses.

We would like to hear from you if you enjoy making music and are able to teach your instrument from beginner to Grade 8 to individuals or groups and deliver ‘Wider Opportunities’ classes.

Applicants should be available to work on Saturday mornings and outside school hours
The post is for a general woodwind teacher though a clarinet specialist is preferred. It is anticipated that the teaching will be in the North and West of the county.

Main Purpose(s) of the job:

This post holder is responsible for ensuring that all County Child Protection Policies are adhered to and concerns are raised in accordance with these policies.

This Job description should be read in conjunction with the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and the provisions of that document will apply to the postholder.

The performance of all the duties and responsibilities shown below will be under the reasonable direction of the Head of Service; and the Head of Service, or other Manager if appropriate, will be mindful of his/her duty to ensure that the employee has a reasonable workload and sufficient support to carry out the duties of the post.

This job description will be reviewed at least annually and any changes will be subject to consultation. The Service’s grievance procedure will be used to resolve any dispute arising out of the job description. Other relevant policies may be the County Council’s Stress at Work Policy and the Dignity at Work Policy.

Main Duties:

In addition to the duties outlined in the STPC document currently in operation, or any subsequent legislation, you will be responsible for:
1. working within the policies and procedures of the County Council and County Music Service

2. undertaking tuition, conducting and coaching as required

3. participating in the Music Service Performance Management scheme

4. liaising with schools, parents and other teachers as required

5. liaising with Music Service Managers as required

6. completing and maintaining accurate records as required, and when requested supply information to the administrative staff and/or Music Service managers

7. attending meetings and staff development /in-service training

8. maintaining an awareness of all Music Service activities and know how to obtain further information

9. maintaining a knowledge of national and local developments within music education

10. taking appropriate responsibility for your own health, safety and welfare and the health, safety and welfare of pupils, visitors and work colleagues in accordance with the requirements of legislation and locally-adopted policies; including taking responsibility for raising concerns with an appropriate manager

For all staff- You have specific responsibilities under Health & Safety legislation to ensure that you:
• Take reasonable care for your own health and safety, and that of others affected by what you do, or do not do
• Cooperate on all issues involving health and safety
• Use work items provided for you correctly, in accordance with training and instructions

SELECTION CRITERIA

Job Title: Peripatetic Music Teacher

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Educational achievements, Qualifications, Training and Knowledge:
• Ability to play to a high standard.
• Knowledge of current trends and issues in the teaching of music
• Experience or ability to teach from beginner to post Grade 8 standard

Experience:
• Experience or ability of teaching from beginner to post Grade 8 standard
• Experience of group teaching

Job related aptitude and skills:
• Ability to conform to Music Service administrative procedures
• Ability to attend work regularly and on time
• Basic working knowledge of ICT enabling use of email and internet functions

Personal qualities:
• Ability to communicate in a professional manner with parents/carers, school and other staff

Special Requirements:
• Satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.
• Use of a car or motorcycle
• Possession of a full driving licence
• Ability and willingness to work reasonable hours outside of the normal school day
